Dan Welden is a master printmaker, painter, teacher and author. He has been making prints and works on paper for over 40 years. His work has been shown in over 65 International solo exhibitions in museums and galleries and over 500 group exhibitions in the U.S., Europe, China, Australia, New Zealand and Peru. His work is in many public and private collections throughout the country including the Amity Art Foundation, Darien, Connecticut; Baltimore Museum of Art, Maryland; Portland Museum of Art, Oregon; and Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania among many others.

Dan is an innovator at the forefront of the alternative health and safety oriented movement of printmaking, and he is the originator of a printmaking technique called the Solarplate method. Dan is the Co-Author with Pauline Muir of ‘Printmaking in the Sun’ published by Watson Guptill in 2001, the comprehensive manual of solarplate methods. He is currently working on an updated edition.

ARTIST BIO-
Finding beauty in what might otherwise appear flawed or imperfect, and
with the ability to see humor in the ludicrous and mundane, Sue Van
Horsen’s artwork reflects the comedy and tragedy of being human, while
allowing the viewer a unique vantage point into the human psyche.

Raised in a working-class suburb of Los Angeles during the sixties, Sue was
surrounded with her mother’s oil paintings. Yet, even as a child, Sue
was drawn to the more existential forms of art and was intrigued with
aspects of the human subject?not merely the thinking subject, but the
acting, feeling, living human. She was fortunate to be growing-up at a
time when art was creating a cultural explosion in the areas of
surrealism, pop, advertising and commercial art, all of which have helped
shape her creative vision. When diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in
2000 Sue’s life-long fascination with advertising and commercial art
encouraged her to venture out as a freelance graphic designer. Her
passion for mechanically reproducible art and love of technology,
eventually drew her toward the ritualistic simplicity and yet dynamic and
complex nature of printmaking.

Sue is a self-taught multi-media artist.
This is her first solo show.

Lennox Dunbar, professor emeritus from Gray's School of Art in Scotland, will make a visit to Ojai to teach a collagraph workshop at the Spotted Dog Studio in early July, 2012. Lennox is an amazing teacher and has an original collagraph process that could also be called painted intaglio.

In the summer of 2012, Santa Barbara City College is offering a 4-week program in Havana, Cuba. On this program you will study photography and printmaking while learning about Cuban history, art and culture. Cuba, visited by very few US citizens due to past travel restrictions, is undergoing a dramatic course correction as a nation and seeing Cuba before the American ban on tourism in the country is lifted will be a valuable experience for you. In addition to experiencing life in Havana, you will take trips outside of Havana to photograph, take notes and make drawings to create a comprehensive photography/ printmaking essay from your experience that will speak to pertinent cultural issues.

The inspiration for Brown’s new work is a story, brought to life in a limited edition art book, and written by her. It describes a scene that typifies human journeys. According to Brown, “I am enticed to convey in images my dreams and life journeys.” Brown is known for the simplicity and depth in the fine art printmaking that she creates. In this collection she includes narrative factors with symbolism connecting the imagined or real paths we take on our journeys.

Brown can be quoted, “As a child I focused on the small, often unobserved miracles of nature: the multihues of a river washed stone, the movement of a sea urchin being gently stroked by the ocean current or the brilliant and sensual yellow stamen of a wild violet. This year, SBP member Elaine LeVasseur is acting as master printer for a boxed portfolio of prints (Edition of 30) by 10 Los Angeles-based contemporary artists in conjunction with the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum exhibition “Michele O’Marah, Video Portraits and the Home Show Revisited”. Each of the 10 artists are visiting Santa Barbara to make prints with Elaine and friends, most all members of the Santa Barbara Printmakers. 7 images will be intaglio and 3 will be relief, done on letterpress by Megan van den Bergh (recently graduated from Harry Reese’s bookarts program at UCSB art department.) The portfolio of 10 different prints will be available in a boxed sets only beginning March 2011. To view the boxed portfolio or to reserve a set {edition of 30}, contact CAF’s new curatorial assistant Karla Blancas (who is awesome) using the contact info at the end of this long, long blog. BTW: this is a fundraiser for CAF. Proceeds from the sale of these sets will provide funding for the Home Show artist’s installation costs and materials.
Elaine’s studio notes:
In December, Elaine, Tristan Blodgett and Patty Post assisted Kirsten Stoltmann to finalized details of her Solarplate print entitled “BFF”, a photo of a purposefully scrawled message torn out of a standard school notebook. Kirsten wanted to learn to ink and wipe her plate...which she did...and ended up with the world’s favorite intaglio combination: Graphic Chemical & Ink’s Bone Black on Arches Cover white, the 8 x 10 plate on 15 x 18 paper. The edition of 30 with 3 A/P’s, one BAT and two Printer’s Proofs has now been printed by Tristan Blodgett. One A/P is kept by the artist, the BAT is kept by Elaine and the Printer’s Proof by the stalwart and responsive Herb DeFriez for his photoshopping/transparency work, and the other PP for Tristan who is not adversely affected by nearly 40 prints from the same plate in two days. Nice.

THE PHOTOS below by Karla Blancas of CAF show artist Bettina Hubby with her etching entitled “Undie Drawer” , a carefully composed photo of her undies, socks, etc., which makes for a gorgeous black and white image. Elaine worked with the overqualified Kathy Bower as press assistant. (Kathy was and may still be president of the National Nature Print Society, a member of the Santa Barbara Printmakers, mother, and a full time attorney.) The artist ended up selecting Room 23’s favorite “black” : Graphic Chemical & Ink’s burnt umber + ultramarine blue. On 15 x 18 BFK Heavyweight White , with a bit of hand applied iridescent copper pigment and a smidgeon of fine silver glitter. Ultra sensuous, but playful. Editioning will be coming up Jan 9th and beyond by Tristan Blodgett, who is a flawless technician at the press. The gold dust in the second photo ended up not being used. Wait till you see this print...!

CAF is actively searching for a few homes for their artists, which require you to open your home, or at least the room or areas that are to the public for limited hours for several weekends beginning late May. CAF provides docents at all times, so you can be home or not. I, Elaine LeVasseur am hosting artist Evan Holloway-more on his amazing print project coming in late January. OMG...so fun!

This Sunday artists Jennifer Rochlin and Florian Morlat will be in town to print. Assisting Elaine will be Herb DeFriez and Ethan Turpin. Tristan will be busy printing Betting Hubby’s edition. Miss Hubby will be in doing the hand application of pigments just as the paper dries, but before the ink does! More info next week on the two new prints. Wish us luck...

Next Sunday, January 16th, we are expecting Evan Holloway and Ry Rocklin on the letterpress, with Kori Newkirk and Jennifer West at the intaglio press.

Ron Pokrasso, artist and master printmaker from Santa Fe, New Mexico, is teaching a “Monotypes and More” workshop in Ojai, Feb 3-7. The class will explore the many possibilities available to the print artist using the monotype process. Techniques such as multiple plate registration, additive and subtractive methods, stencils, chine colle, ink viscosity, ghost printing and combinations of these will be utilized to create unique works of art. Ron is a caring teacher who will push you to stretch your creative muscles.

The class will use non-toxic Akua inks.

All inks and supplies for the class are included in the fee, except for print paper, which is available at cost for purchase in the studio.

The class is limited to 8 students.

A word about the Spotted Dog Studio: This is an open-access print studio located at the home of Linda Taylor and Ray Magee. The studio is large, well lighted, with access to a home and beautiful garden. Three large presses and one small press enable the print artist to create a great variety of prints during workshops.

A word about Ron Pokrasso: Ron was the originator of the printmaking program at the Santa Fe College and now operates his own printmaking studio in Santa Fe, the Lynn Bernay Memorial Print Studio. He has extensive teaching experience across the U.S. Ron teaches during the spring and summer at Santa Raparata School of Art in Florence, Italy. This will be Ron’s 5th visit to Ojai to teach.

The Best of The Best- Lompoc

Every Year, the Lompoc Valley Arts Council hosts an exhibition featuring
artists nominated by the several Santa Barbara County arts organization
(including the Printmakers). Each organization can send 5 members to the
show.The Santa Barbara Printmakers nominates members who have won prizes in
the most recent exhibition (in this case, Channing Peake.)

Kay Brown, Ines Monguio, Nicholas Spohrer, Nina de Creeft Ward and Marilyn
Ziemer were our nominees.. I am very pleased to announce that three of the
five entrants from Santa Barbara Printmakers won Awards: Nina took First
Place, and Nicholas and Marilyn won Honorable Mentions. Congratulations!
Kudos also to Kay and Ines - you were among the Best of the Best showing at
Lompoc. All of you did us proud!

Linda Taylor will host Santa Fe master printmaker Michael McCabe from Nov 29-Dec 10. Michael will teach 3 printmaking classes at Linda's Spotted Dog Studio in Ojai. The first class, from Nov 29-Dec 1, is an introductory class for artists not familiar with the print process. The emphasis will be on monotype, a very painterly and mixed media type of print. The second class ( Dec 2-4) will emphasize printing with chine colle, where interesting papers and fabric are imbedded in the print. The third class (Dec 6-10) will emphasize the viscosity printing process, both with monotypes and with etching and collagraph. Michael worked for Hand Graphics in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for many years and now runs his own print studio there. He is an inspired and sensitive teacher. Etching/Litho Press for Sale: The bed size is approx. 54" x 16 3/4". It has two floor pedals as well as a hand crank to rotate the drum.. He used it for monotypes, I believe. the subsequent owner used it for etchings. My husband rotated the drum with the crank the other day and it moved very easily and smoothly. Asking $300. Call To Artists

The Artist Union Gallery in Ventura will be organizing the Art of the Book 3 from September 18 to October 24, 2010. Book art and Artist Books of any form, material or size will be featured, from miniscule to huge.

In addition, two-dimensional art with text as an integral part of the piece (not only a graphic element) will also be considered.

This year the curator, Inés Monguió, is looking for assemblage work featuring text or representing a story that can be “read” by the viewer.

The juror will be Joe Cardella, of Art Life fame. This original magazine run for 25 years uninterrupted and is in the collections of museums and collectors internationally. He is an accomplished artist in many forms, including assemblage, sculpture, and photography.

All entries must be for sale. Intake is scheduled Monday September 13 from 4 to 7, and Tuesday September 14 from 9 to 12. Entries may be mailed, or delivered earlier to the curator.

Santa Barbara Printmakers members, Christina Altfeld, Karen L. Brown, Judy Gibbs, Lynn Letourneau, and Monica Wiesblott will be showing their works of arts in Southern California in the "Inkspots" 'Think Ink' Show at Gallery 255 in Ventura, California.

"The Inkspots" of San Buenaventura", the only Fine Art Printmaking Group in Ventura County will be having a new show with all new works of art, entitled “Think Ink” . The Show is at Gallery 255.
Gallery 255 is located at 255 South Laurel Street in Ventura and is adjacent to Sea Breeze Art Studios. Gallery Hours are Thursday & Saturday noon to 5 pm, Fridays noon to 8 (1st Friday noon to 9 pm). KB M-26 etching press for sale.I saw this press and suggest it sell for $1750, even though it sold for $3800 new in 1988.It takes a full 22 x 30 sheet of paper.KB went out of business many years ago. I believe their presses were overpriced and had some design weaknesses, but it should work fine for a non professional.It has a 1/4 inch thick phenolic resin bed (yes, very thin) and a lighter weight spoke type wheel that has one arm missing. To set the pressure it uses a lever system with a narrow screw, which means, not for solarplate. These folks are in a hurry to sell this press, call asap to view it.It is located just off La Colina Road.

Students are encouraged to bring previously etched plates and dry point plates to create expressive multi layered monoprints using Akua inks. 2 day workshop is $225. which includes all supplies except paper. SILK ACQUATINT WORKSHOP with Linda Taylor

Silk Aquatint is a very beautiful and low tech way to create an aquatint print without acids or metal. A piece of fabric is attached to a plexiglass or cardboard "plate", the image is worked with acrylic emulsion, and then printed using an etching press. The plates are very sturdy and can produce editions. Each participant will make 2-3 plates. Linda will also demonstrate chine colle and stencils with these acquatint plates. 2 days plus one half day is $380. which includes all supplies except paper. ENCAUSTIC MONOTYPE WORKSHOP with Paula Roland

Paula Roland www.paularoland.com will be a panelist at the 5th Annual International Encasutics Conference in San Francisco the end of September so we asked her to do an encaustics workshop while she is in the Bay Area. I took this workshop from Paula in Santa Fe studio years ago and it was fabulous!

The Encaustic Monotype is an innovative, contemporary process and a painterly approach to printmaking. This process is experimental, freeing, and has been used successfully with a range of imagery and styles. The encaustic monotype combines the ancient painting medium of encaustic with the popular monotype process. Encaustic sticks (beeswax and pigment in solid form) are used to draw on a heated metal plate. The wax melts instantly and is manipulated with brushes and other tools. Absorbent paper is laid on the plate, the back is rubbed, and the image is transferred to the paper by hand.

Eva Isaksen, born in Bodø, Norway, draws and paints a rich array of textures that are printed onto thin sheets of paper. These papers are then collaged together creating rich and intriguing surfaces. She will be leading us with a variety of special techniques she has developed by drawing and painting on paper.

Registration will be by email and USPS. The deadline for the receipt of both email and USPS mail entries and payment of fees is Wednesday, April 28. Volunteers will receive entered prints at specified day, time and location from Monday May 3 to Thursday May 6, and transport them to Ojai on Friday morning, May 7. Entrants will be assigned a drop off location as near as possible to their residence. Information as to day, time and place and entry numbers will be sent to members by email or USPS mail prior to drop off dates.

Volunteers will return unsold work to the Santa Barbara on June 3. It can be picked up from 2 – 5 PM at Leanne Roth’s studio at 2030 De La Vina Street, Santa Barbara which is on upper de la Vina near State Street, across from Trader Joe’s.

OJAI special ENTRY fees & requirements

Entry fee is $10 mandatory membership fee of OCA plus $10 for the first entry and $5 for a second, maximum of 2 entries. There are no size restrictions for this exhibition. ENTRIES WILL BE CURATED FOR PRESENTATION upon arrival at Ojai, and entry fees for pieces not hung for reasons of presentation will be refunded. Members are guaranteed two entries on the condition that they meet the presentation standards of the Santa Barbara Printmakers. You are invited to contact the Board if you have any questions concerning the presentation of your work. {Entry for full time students with valid ID is $10}.

Ojai requires that: ALL WORK MUST BE FOR SALE. The Art Center is a non- profit, volunteer-based organization and the only way to pay for the facility and all that it has to offer is to collect a hanging fee and a 30% donation on all sales. Works cannot have been previously shown at the center.

PRIZES: Viewers and visitors to the exhibition will choose our winners. Each year at this show we allow the audience to vote for their favorite prints. First Choice will be awarded a $75 prize, 2nd $50 and 3rd $25. A minimum of 25 votes must be cast to award prizes.

Competition Guidelines:

MEDIUMS: All types of original prints (not reproductions) are eligible including silkscreen, serigraphy, linocuts,lithographs etchings, collagraphs, monotypes, solar printing, and these traditional techniqes combined with photochemical or digital printing. Works must be primarily hand printed and completed within the last three years. Works with more than a minimum of collage or hand coloring will not be accepted.

PRESENTATION: Entries will be curated for framing and presentation. The frame must be well assembled and in good condition. Glass and mats should be clean and the edges of the cut window unfoxed (i.e., not turning brown in color). Mats must be neutral color (white or cream), no colored liners and be a minimum of 2” around unless the artwork is floated. Frames should not overwhelm or take away from the print. The final arbiter of whether or not prints meet these requirements is the curator.

JUROR: Tim Schiffer is the Executive Director of the Museum of Ventura County in Ventura, a position he has held since 1999. He was curator at the Museum from 1993 to 1999 and was responsible for all exhibitions. He received his B.A. in Art from Yale, where he studied printmaking with Gabor Peterdi, and his M.F.A. in Painting from UCSB, and was a Lecturer in Art and Gallery Director at the College of Creative Studies at UCSB from 1980 to 1988. He has served as an exhibition juror for many organizations, including the City of Ventura, the Thousand Oaks Art Association, the Arts Fund, and the Atkinson Gallery at Santa Barbara City College. He was a volunteer and board member at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum for many years, and currently serves as a Trustee of Ganna Walska Lotusland. He lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, artist Pamela Kendall Schiffer.

REMINDER: DIRECT-TO-ARTIST GRANTS

A reminder that the Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative’s First Direct-to-Artist Grants application process will be ending at midnight, February 28, 2010. These grants are made possible with support from the Santa Barbara Foundation and the Santa Barbara Redevelopment Agency. At least two grants in four different categories (Literary, Performing, Visual and New Media/Film) will be awarded. Grant winners will be announced at the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission’s Annual Art Symposium on April 16th – a great opportunity for additional exposure for the awardees.

Over 100 additional musicians, writers, sculptors, filmmakers, composers, painters and artists of all varieties, have registered on our new website since we first announced these grants, and we’re now closing in on a total of 350 registered members! GRANT CRITERIA
We have kept the grant criteria very simple. The goal was to invite surprises - encourage the creative community to do what they do best. The only criteria are you must reside in Santa Barbara County and agree to have your art interact with the city of Santa Barbara in some way of your choosing, and we ask that you describe that. Beyond that, we simply ask that you to tell us who you are, which of the four categories you're applying for, and what you intend to do with the money. We also give you a chance to share examples of your previous work or other supporting materials by attaching files online. That's it!

Once the application process is closed on the deadline, all eligible applications will be equally considered by an independent peer-review panel within each artistic discipline.

We hope this will be the first small step toward creating innovative and truly sustainable funding models for direct financial support to artists from all disciplines in our community. We welcome your participation and support, and look forward to collaborating with you.

This class uses the portrait to heighten our skills of observation. Students are encouraged to work large and freely while allowing the portrait to emerge. We are opening an exhibit on French printing next week called

Empire Elegance: The Age of Redoute.
For a case on stipple engraving technique I am looking for some old engraving tools; roulette, poupee, burin. Etc.
Any ideas? We have some modern examples but they don’t look great with the old engravings.

This Three-day workshop will explore the exiting combination of a simple lithographic process of gum transfer and monoprinting technique. Oil-based and water-based monoprinting will be demonstrated. Each participant will use photocopies of original drawings or photographic images (including CMYK separations) as printed layers; then, combining them with additional monoprinted layers , using additive and subtractive techniques on wet media acetate. We will create complex images by layering these various elements, and by utilizing ghost printing, chine colle’, stencils, and spontaneous painterly markmaking. In a short period of time, participants will have a new series of beautiful monoprints.

Printmaking and Technology: Interview with Elaine LeVasseur

Recently a new Tamarind Institute student doing research for a paper around the topic of technology and printmaking specifically focusing on how today's advances in digital technology have affected the fine art printmaking world interviewed our very own Elaine LeVasseur on the subject. Here is the interview:

How did you get started in printmaking?

I TOOK AN ART SURVEY COURSE MY LAST YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL WHICH INCLUDED
MAKING ONE LINOCUT.

What printmaking processes are you familiar with?
STONE AND PLATE LITHOGRAPHY; ACID ETCHING WITH HARD GROUND, AQUATINT,
SOFTGROUND, SUGAR LIFT, in intaglio, relief, four color process, viscosity,
with chine colle', dye resist, a' la poupee';
DRYPOINT AND ENGRAVING BY HAND IN METAL, WITH ROTARY TOOLS; SAND BLASTING
AND HOT TOOLS IN ACRYLIC; COLLAGRAPH; WOODCUT; LINOCUT; SCREEN PRINTING &
POCHOIR; PHOTOPOLYMER PLATES; NATURE PRINTING; GUM BICHROMATE; MONOPRINTING.
(Specifically, I do not know paper plate lithography, letterpress or
photogravure.)

As an educator and collaborative printer (correct me if I'm wrong, I thought
Jason said you were a collaborative printer), have you seen interest in
printmaking rise and fall through the years?
Yes, in 1990, the art market and the print market had gone to hell and all
my artists clients were emotionally and financially wrecked. There was no
work. At the same time, it seemed as though most of my students at Santa
Barbara City College were more flakey and mostly wanted to learn printmaking
to silkscreen T-shirts of their favorite bands for the local black market
(predecessor to the practice of up and downloading pirated music and video)
or, at best, corner the local market on handmade greeting cards via bland
linocuts. By '91, all the art dealers who sold my prints all over the US,
had gone out of business and one cheated me out of payment for nine large
works. (This was a black time for many artists I knew in Los Angeles, at
least. I personally know several whose gallerists did not pay, or who
repeatedly reported sale prices lower than actual, in order to pay a smaller
fee to the consigning artist.)
I got back into printmaking in 97 when I attended two solid weeks of a 8
week program in Boston that was a Contemporary Printmaking Symposium. It
involved 22 institutions in and around Boston and there has never been
anything like it since. It connected me with printmakers all over the world
and I realized that my experience of there being no interest in printmaking
was more about California. I realized at that time that printmaking had to
be reintroduced regionally and generationally due to the high level of
technique required to master it. Glassblowing and fine furniture making are
other arts that require this regeneration, otherwise the craft dies with the
teacher or atelier owner. Printmaking and other process and equipment-heavy
arts require a very enthusiastic, outgoing artist who is capable of drawing
in students and artist-clients over a period of decades. Talented
printmakers can be self-taught and solitary, but this is rare, and does not
inspire new collectors.

What sort of changes have you witnessed with printmaking during your time
involved with it?
Either in the process or how printmaking is perceived.
I have witnessed the rise and fall of popularity of stone lithography. It's
rise with Tamarind's success in luring famous artists to printmaking in Los
Angeles in the 60's, its quick spread to New York, Florida, Texas, Kansas
and Canada, the race to make the biggest and most technically difficult
prints by both Ken Tyler, Gemini GEL and others, then and its precipitous
fall during the financial disaster of the early '90's, due to its expensive,
laborious, unwieldy and unforgiving processes. Finally, I have seen the
disappearance of printmaking studios in large universities across the US,
along with the abandonment of dark room photography. I have seen the
invention of the photocopy machine, pre-sensitized photo etching plates from
Japan; Ball aluminum plates for lithography and their pre-sensitized plates.
And finally, the arrival of the first good digital imaging machines, the
Iris printers in Boston and other major cities. Tons of prints from the
first 10 years of digital printing have been lost due to fugitive ink
colors, including blacks.

Do you think there have been any technological advancements that have had a
significant impact on printmaking? Please explain.

Yes, the availability of pre-coated metal plates enabled photo images to be
made more easily in etching and lithography. Before these materials were
available, a printmaker had to have a good darkroom with oversized trays and
sinks, correctly store expensive toxic chemicals and spend long periods
getting coatings to be smooth and adhere well. This was backbreaking work
and generally only rich artists or commercial (chain galleries) artists
could afford to do them. Now, excellent photo images, including fine text,
are quite easy to achieve, even in larger formats.
The second great technical advance for printmakers was popularity of the
silk-screened T-shirt. This drove the opening of screen printing shops and
also meant that even smaller cities had shops with large exposure lamps and
vacuum tables that could be accessed for making photo silk screens, and
photo zinc and copper, etc. I don't think the photo films such as Imag-On
made much impact compared to the screen print shops.

What are your takes on the rise of digital techniques in art making and
digital printing? Do you think these new techniques are harmful to traditional
printmaking techniques such as lithography? Or helpful? Neither?

The good and bad of digital imaging has been heavily discussed in every arts
journal and school for the past 15 years and we all realize that controlling
the use of anything that can be transmitted digitally will soon be
impossible and ultimately a non-issue. On the positive side, it's now
easier and more fun to use computers to do things that only geniuses with a
budget or special access used to be able to do. Of course, computers and the
Web are quite democratic and allow the truly talented to be more productive,
more widely appreciated and their work better documented and preserved than
ever before.
On the "dark side", everyone knows that currently, in every creative
endeavor from writing, to music and visual art, it is difficult for those
without great talent to avoid the temptation of digitally copying and
re-using the work of others without permission. It is now called re-mixing
in music and collage or re-visioning in the visual arts, but is still
considered lying and stealing in fiction and non fiction writing. Dance and
theater are actually about reproduction, so perhaps only pirated videos of
performances appear to be an issue there. Computers, the Internet and
digital output devices, I think, result in lots more people with arts
degrees and a far smaller percentage of those graduates able to understand,
much less master drawing, design and color use. That many artists and art
consumers think that being able to use a computer to make art is an artistic
achievement in and of itself is another issue. This should disappear as a
problem within the next 10 years when everyone is using computer devices to
invent their own art and billions of images will be available to anyone.

Do you find that there is more experimentation with digital techniques in
combination with traditional printmaking?

It is very common to use digital technology in printmaking. It replaces dark
room photography in all its forms. I have offered a popular photo polymer
class through Santa Barbara City College since 1998. There are few
printmakers within a 100 mile radius who have not used digital processes by
now, at least to document their prints for catalogs and websites.
I personally use the web to do research for my own art and to document the
works. I do a substantial amount of collaborative art projects, most of
which use digital imaging.

What do you see in the future for printmaking processes as we continue to make
the shift to a more digital culture?

Hand processes will continue to be sought out and mastered by artists who
desire to work directly with materials and equipment. However, printmaking
training and equipment will become more difficult to access. Artists are
already finding that they must travel farther, pay more, and rely on
personal networks to learn processes or arrange for editions. Hand pulled
prints will become more rare for the non-famous or non-rich, as it used to
be prior to the 1960's.

"just finished printing my contribution to the annual SNAP calendar. I used relief Solarplates on a letter press, which had never been done here before. "

The Project and Process:

This project is one page of a calendar made by members of SNAP (Society of Northern Alberta Printartists) as a fundraiser to be sold at their annual Holiday print sale at the end of November. I was asked to do something for the month of May. My two-color image is made with two relief plates. The first 2 plates I made were too big and had too many open white spaces. So I redesigned the plates slightly and made them smaller. Then I glued (using water based rubber cement) a piece of vinyl magnet the same size as the plate on to a slightly larger block of wood. I used spray adhesive to give added strength to keep the plate from slipping off the block. The spray adhesive isn't permanent so allows removal of the plates in order to use the block another time. The registration was perfect, though perhaps this was beginner's luck. The only adjustments I needed to make on the press were to raise the block to make it type high using card and paper and to pad the drum where the plate was to give it added pressure.

It's that time of year again when all the printers gather for our Annual Show. It is the opportunity to win prizes, exhibit as well as be included in a growing community of print makers. Following is the prospectus for the exhibition that will run from October 1st through October 30th, 2009.

“OFF THE PLATE” – NEW WORKS BY PRINT MAKING GROUP: “THE INKSPOTS OF SAN BUENAVENTURA”: APPEARS AT GALLERY 255 FROM SEPTEMBER 10 THROUGH OCTOBER 10, 2009.

VENTURA, CA (August 3, 2009) - The inkspots, Ventura County’s only fine art printmaking group, will be exhibiting at Gallery 255 in Ventura, California from September 10 through October 10, 2009. Gallery 255 is located at 255 South Laurel Street in Ventura and is adjacent to Sea Breeze Art Gallery and Studios.

“Off the Plate” will include works of art by: Karen L. Brown, Donna Carver, Judy Gibbs, Virginia Furmanski, Tiger Huang, Lynne LeTourneau, Sandra McCullough, Leslie Plimpton, Betsy Quinn and Monica Wiesblott. Their individual styles are as unique as the artists themselves.

Printmaking is the process of making original artworks by running a prepared surface through a printing press. These works of art are not photographic reproductions of a painting but original works of art in and of them selves. Printmaking techniques fall into four major categories: relief, intaglio, planographic and stencil. Each printmaking technique has its unique qualities. Many of these techniques will be included in “Off the Plate” show: monotype, monoprint, drypoint etching, lithography; solarplate etching, woodcuts, linocuts, and relief work.

“Off the Plate” promises to be an exciting show. For the first time, in addition to their major pieces, “the inkspots of San Buenaventura” will offer a limited edition folio for sale. The folio, entitled the “Directors Series”, will include one limited edition print by each the ten artists. Only ten folios were created. Yes, if that print-maker is Linda Taylor who spent many months restoring the mural on the side of Jonathan’s at Peirano’s. Her artistry in printmaking was recognized by the Museum of Ventura County when she was named first Artist in Residence. Printmaking is at the center of Linda’s artistic life and has been since her student days at San Diego State University where she took a print-making class. “It was love at first sight!” She employs all types of print techniques, either alone or in combination, creating works in a semi-abstract figurative mode with an emphasis on color, texture and line. She is known for bringing world class printers to workshops held in her studio. Linda is deeply involved in her community, having been a teacher and serving at present on the Ojai School Board, work that cuts into her gardening efforts. The show in Ojai has been postponed. Those of us transporting the work for installation have our hands full either evacuating, waiting to evacuate or accommodating people who have already been evacuated from the fire areas.

Terry at the art center was kind enough to allow us a weeks time to regroup and recover. Our new tentative installation date is next Thursday at 1230pm. For those of you in Ojai, please hold onto your work until next week.. feel free to contact me with questions at 805.967.9265.

The reception that was scheduled for this Sunday has been canceled. We can reschedule it for the following Sunday, May 17th. That will be decided next week when we have a better idea of a new plan.

The Monday 1-4 Basic Printmaking class Room 23, taught by Siu Zimmerman, still has openings. After working with relief and reduction print techiques last Fall, and drypoint and lithograph techniques in the Winter class, now, in this Spring class, we will learn some new things and how to combine techniques. This coming Monday we'll work with triple-drop/3-color prints followed the next week by collagraphs. The seven week session will conclude with a basic introduction to Solarplate etching, a non-toxic process.

Wear studio (old) clothes or bring an apron to protect your clothes. If you have latex or nitrile gloves that fit well, bring them too. Materials fee is $45. All paper, plates, and tools will be supplied.

Greetings Printmakers!

Here are links to the UV blocking pens from Mark-Tex that I use in Safe Printmaking with Solarplate, at the Schott Center (when black sumi or Higgins ink for film is not right for some reason.) All of my classes include substantial training on how to use printmaking tools and chemicals safely.

These Mark-Tex pens last for years and exude a deep red translucent ink that blocks UV light very well. The pens are a good weight and size, and are perfect for artists who like markers- and I think a better value than most art store products. The image eraser pens are not as necessary since these pen marks can also be wiped off transparency film before it dries, but they are handy, tiny solvent pens that might make sense in your home practice. Remember that most markers are solvent based to make them evaporate quickly. Use where there is fresh air exchange and put the cap on asap!

Before using these, be sure to download a PDF of the MSDS for each item. Search the supplier website for this sheet, they are always there, as required by law. There is xylene in the Mark-Tex pens but the amount emitted for our type of use is quite negligible, compared to Sharpies. Do not tape any open marker under your nose for long periods of time – it will give you a headache. :-)

While I am at it. I recently attended an updated Cal-OSHA training course. The course was 4 + hours long and it was designed to teach me how to read the new requirements for employers and employees in the workplace. Just a training to show how the 2-inch binder was organized, you see.. .Anyway, I have since spent a good 50 hours in my home office working out a Safety Program for my company, HiFi Club, and have begun to give weekly one hour long safety trainings. I am very clear that harmful chemicals are being made by the billions of gallons a year, and that every ounce of those chemicals is poured out into our water, air and soil by US, not THEM. Using less and less is the only serious way to keep these poisons out of our bodies and those of our animal and plant friends. Think twice before you open any cleaner or solvent: Can I clean without this? How little can I use and get the job done? Can I avoid pouring out more than I absolutely need or avoid atomizing (spraying it) to keep it out of my lungs? It is actually more important to avoid solvent use in classrooms, since we have so many people in one room, and since the instructor is exposed repeatedly over the years. So, you can see that it is my own self-interest that drives the safe use of solvents in my classrooms.

Isopropyl alcohol is a solvent and it is not safe, just slower to kill you if you are over exposed. Many artists think using Soy Solve or Alcohol means they are working without toxic materials and I believe they end up using a lot more of these solvents than if they were using something like Lacquer Thinner. Never pour or spray alcohol or Soy Solve on the press bed or your work table. Just use a soft cloth to clean the surface. If the ink is still wet, it will come off easily and cleanly. If ink is dried and stubborn, pour a tiny bit of alcohol or Soy Solve on a corner of the rag and rub the spot. This rag should then be placed outside to dry or into a covered metal trashcan indoors.

"Inkspots of San Buenaventura" a history:

About 3 years ago, in her retirement, Ginny Furmanski bought a press from a print maker in Santa Barbara and had it delivered to her garage. She found that working alone in her garage was not very creative for her. Artists Karen Brown, Judy Gibbs, and Betsy Quinn were friends interested in printmaking and after they tried the press they were hooked! Next step was to move out of the garage and find a studio where they all could work was born.

They then found the perfect space at Sea Breeze Gallery and moved in the press. The Sea Breeze Gallery and the studio there offered them a great space to work, a wonderful supportive group of artists, and a gallery in which to show their work! They are now celebrating their second year at Sea Breeze.

To defray the cost of the studio space they opened the group up to include 10 fine art printmaking artists and the "Inkspots of San Buenaventura" was born. The current artists which comprise "inkspots of San Buenaventura" are: Karen Brown, Donna Carver, Judy Gibbs, Ginny Furmanski, Tiger Haung, Lynn Letourneau, Sandra McCullough, Leslie Plimpton, Betsy Quinn, and Monica Wiesblott.

We are the only "Fine Art Print Artist Group in Ventura County.

The Constructed Mark Printmaking Workshop 2009

Ron Pokrasso, master printmaker from Santa Fe, New Mexico, will be giving a Non Toxic Printmaking Workshop, The Constructed Mark, at The Rusty Barn in Santa Barbara, CA, 9am – 5 pm daily, April 6 – 10, 2009. This workshop utilizes Akua Intaglio Inks, a soy base ink. No solvents will be used in this class. Ron is an outstanding teacher and artist who has over 20 years experience with various printmaking techniques; and, is featured in Julia Ayers book, "Monoprinting". Ron has developed this workshop especially for artists who are looking for a challenge in new ways of working in printmaking and associated techniques.

This workshop focuses on the transformation of works on paper to panels that can then be handled as paintings, collages, and assemblages. Various forms of printmaking set the stage for images in the first two days. Then, using woodworking tools, wood panels, and hollow core doors participants will learn how to construct their own substrates for furthering their compositions. Collage plays a major role and the various uses of acrylic sealers and glues will be demonstrated. Generally the workshops are open-ended and dictated somewhat by the needs and experience of the participants. The notion of the "artist as an inventor" will be stressed as problem solving such as creating supports for assemblage and cutting into surfaces become the focus of how best to express each individual’s artistic vision.

The dynamic of experimenting, using what works, and taking it to the next level is what has moved Ron Pokrasso to create intriguing, increasingly sophisticated compositions. As a great recycler of both materials and ideas, Pokrasso will share his methods and concepts which have driven him to use any object - guitar strings, joist hangers, paintbrushes, plexiglas palettes, whatever works - to create his highly colorful constructed artworks.

Space is limited to 8 participants, and it will be first come. The fee is $670 (payable in full no later than March 14), which includes all printmaking and wood working materials except for printing paper.

Stephanie Dotson, Santa Barbara print newbie extraordinaire is looking for printers with some experience to help fill her intermediate printmaking class ASAP! It’s slated to be a great class and it needs enrollment help to run. If you have print experience and have been thinking about taking a city college printmaking class, this is the time!!. You will need to have taken the introduction to printmaking at SBCC or have printmaking experience at another institution.

SPRING 2008 CLASS INCLUDES GUEST ARTIST AILI SCHMELTZ, () Aili will be conducting a workshop on her specialty techniqe : NONTOXIC WATERLESS LITHOGRAPHY which uses recycledball-grained aluminum plates and rubber-based inks. It’s COOL stuff, let me tell you.

ALSO SCHEDULED: Spring visit to GEMINI G.E.L. editioning studios () and other visiting printmakers sharing their secrets.

ADDITIONAL TECHNIQUES: Converting a photographic image to a dot pattern using Adobe Photoshop. Monotype with visiting artist. Mixed media Digital Printmaking!!! Collograph! And finally acrylic aquatint in our new spray booth.

READ!: Scheduled readings which expose printmaking as the bad economy’s best friend and a SOCIAL MOVEMENT, beyond a series of processes.

Class division is a formality and students may always switch medium focus after enrollment.

Calling all drawers

Pamela Zwehl-Burke teaches Art 123 Figure Drawing/Anatomy at SBCC (on the hill not the Schott Center!) credit program, Tuesdays, 11:15-4:05, class start January 27 (I think). The class will be structured to look at basic drawing conventions, drawing to investigate form, basic human anatomy, and, finally, making figure drawings which document structure and surface. We will start with our own body consciousness, learn what to look for when "picturing" external form, how to organize what we know and see into expressive drawings.

Pamela needs 4 more people for the Figure Drawing/Anatomy class for the Spring semester or the class may be dropped. It's a fantastic class (having taken it myself several years ago), great for brushing up on your anatomy but also to learn it formally if you haven't already. I can't speak highly enough of the energy that Pamela brings to her teaching. She is retired and only teaching this one semester class.. for those of you who missed being a student of hers now is your chance to experience the enthusiasm and skill first hand.

Also....Linda Taylor will be hosting Santa Fe master printer Michael McCabe of Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the Spotted Dog Studio in Ojai, Dec. 1-5, for an intensive monotype workshop using Akua inks. Michael usually teaches at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Santa Fe during the summer, so we are very lucky to have him in our area. Two spaces are still available for this workshop, which is $625 for the 5 days and includes all printing materials except for paper. The Spotted Dog Studio has 4 presses, which means that participants have plenty of press time. Chairperson, Sara Norquay called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM. The following board members were in attendance: Nicole Strasburg, Sara Norquay, Jerilynne Nibbe, Don Zimmerman, Pamela Zwehl-Burke. Absent was Jana Zimmer. Twenty-two members attended.

Introductions:
• Sara asked each person to tell a little about his or her self and the kind of printmaking each did.
• The Board Members were introduced. There was some discussion of how the board has worked together.

Present State of SB Printmakers:
• Each of our shows this year has been highly successful.
• The following shows planned for the coming year:
• Ojai in May
• Gallery 3 East probably in July
• The 15th Annual Open Juried Show at the Faulkner Gallery in October
• We were able to make a donation to the Santa Barbara Art Association Student Art Fund.
• 2009 dues are payable in January. A reminder will be sent to the membership. New people juried into the September Show will be invited to join if they pay dues in January.
• 2009 will also the time to elect new members to serve on the board. Sara announced that she will be stepping down as chair as she is moving to Canada. She asked that any member interested in serving on the board email their name to Nicole. (We need you!)
• Nicole is tracking sales from our shows and asked that members who sell from the Faulkner show contact her.

Points introduced but not decided were:
• Need for volunteers especially for show ingatherings and for the sitting schedule for the Faulkner show. A suggestion was made that we pay someone to do the sitting schedule for the Annual Open Juried show.
• The purchase of a computer to keep our records, databases, and making show tags.
• Additional shows.
• A second opportunity to jury in new members.
• The possibility of having open membership or having categories of membership, i.e., active and associate members.
• The possibility of becoming a non-profit organization
• Working with other printmaking groups across the country on projects. Holly Harmon has a project in mind.

Members expressed appreciation for the communication the board has provided. Many commented on the usefulness of the SB Printmakers website and blog. Thanks to Nicole for her work on the blog.

Pamela Zwehl-Burke is an artist, educator and book-maker. The books she makes are called "Artist`s Books". When asked for a definition, she says, "An Artist`s Book is one where the artist is responsible for everything - the structure, the form and the content."

Artist`s books can be unique objects or made in editions. The structure can vary from fairly standard to whatever comes from the artist`s imagination.

Pamela`s books are very personal, based on events and passages in her life. "Meditations" is a word that`s often used.

The Book Den, in collaboration with the Downtown Organization and neighboring art venues, is excited to present 1st Thursday, an evening of art and culture in Downtown Santa Barbara. On the first Thursday of every month, participating downtown galleries and other venues will stay open from 5-8 p.m. (or later) to offer free access to art in a fun and social environment.

Enjoy an evening of culture by strolling the Historic Arts District’s 30-plus participating venues. These venues will offer special programming such as artists’ receptions, music, demonstrations, lectures, wine tastings, and of course, an array of artwork. As you wander between galleries, take in the live musical performances and interactive exhibits outside on State Street.

The 15th annual exhibition is mounted and last Thursday's reception was well attended. Thanks to Bob Mask for taking some wonderful pictures of the exhibit for us.

The board wishes to thank all those who made this year's show one of our best ever. We had over 150 entries (156 to be exact), with 134 accepted into the show. We have 19 potential new members and 47 of our original members brought work to the ingathering.

None of this would have been possible without the help from:

Tony Askew, who had the enormous task of hanging everything AND completed it in under 2 hours!! wow!

Audie & Linda Love, the silent helping hands of the juror.

Artist Biography

Jocelyn Webb Pedersen is an artist and fine press printer. Her work is in the collections of the New York Public Library, the Library of Congress, The Getty Special Collections, Yale, Harvard and more, including Wells College, where she was the first Victor Hammer Fellow in the BookArts. She is currently at work on White, a limited edition book featuring the poetry of Charles Simic, the current United States Poet Laureate, and her own artwork, printing and book design. She lives in Los Angeles with her family.
