PRINTMAKING AT SPOTTED DOG STUDIO IN OJAI WITH LINDA TAYLOR

MID FEBRUARY IN OJAI.

COLLAGRAPH PRINTMAKING –
A RICH, VERSATILE AND NON-TOXIC PRINTMAKING
PROCESS- FEBRUARY 13-17 – 9 AM TO 5 PM EACH DAY
PARTICIPANTS WILL LEARN SILK AQUATINT USING A VARIETY OF
FABRICS AS WELL AS CREATING SEVERAL
PRINT PLATES USING CARBORUNDUM, TEXTURED MATERIALS SUCH AS FABRIC AND PAPERS
AND A VARIETY OF TEXTURED GEL AND ACRYLIC MEDIUMS. VARIOUS WAYS TO PRINT THE COLLAGRAPHS WILL
BE USED, INCLUDING STENCILS, REDUCTION, CHINE COLLE AND VISCOSITY METHODS. THE PRINTING PLATES CREATED WILL GIVE IMAGES
WITH WONDERFUL AND FANCIFUL TEXTURES.
ALL PLATEMAKING MATERIALS WILL BE SUPPLIED, AS WELL AS ALL
INKS AND INK ADDITIVES. INKS USED WILL BE OIL BASE, WITH AN EMPHASIS ON
NON-TOXIC WAYS TO USE OIL BASE INKS.
ARTISTS MAY BRING THEIR OWN PRINTMAKING PAPER OR PURCHASE IT
FROM OJAI CREATES (10% DISCOUNT) DUE TO
THE TEXTURED NATURE OF COLLAGRAPHS, PAPER FOR PRINTING MUST BE DAMPENED.
WORKSHOP FEE - $450—DEPOSIT OF $200

TRADITIONAL ETCHING WITH ZINC AND NITRIC ACID-FEB. 20-24
PARTICIPANTS WILL DEVELOP PERSONAL IMAGES USING ZINC PLATES,
ETCHING THE DESIGNS WITH NITRIC ACID.
TRADITIONALLY ETCHED PLATES CREATE IMAGES OF GREAT RICHNESS AND BEAUTY.
SOME PRINTMAKING EXPERIENCE IS HELPFUL FOR THIS WORKSHOP,
BUT NOT NECESSARY.
WORKING METHODS INCLUDE AQUATINT, LINE ETCHING, DRYPOINT,
SOFT GROUND, OPEN BITE, BURNISHING AND IF TIME ALLOWS, DEVELOP A SMALL
VISCOSITY ETCHED PLATE. IMAGES MAY BE
CREATED USING ONE OR SEVERAL OF THE TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES.
ALL ACIDS, CLEANING SUPPLIES, SAFETY EQUIPMENT, INKS AND INK
ADDITIVES ARE SUPPLIED IN THIS WORKSHOP.
INKS USED WILL BE BOTH AKUA AND OIL BASE INKS, WITH AN EMPHASIS ON
NON-TOXIC PRINTMAKING PRACTICE.
PARTICIPANTS WILL BRING THEIR OWN ZINC PLATES (3-4 IS
SUGGESTED, NO LARGER THAN 8 X 10) AND
PRINTMAKING PAPER. PAPER MUST BE
DAMPENED FOR THIS PROCESS.
WORKSHOP FEE - $400 – DEPOSIT OF $200

Lennox Dunbar, professor emeritus from Gray's School of Art in Scotland, will make a visit to Ojai to teach a collagraph workshop at the Spotted Dog Studio in early July, 2012. Lennox is an amazing teacher and has an original collagraph process that could also be called painted intaglio.

Possible dates are July 2-6, or July 5-9.
Only 8 people will fit into this workshop, and the fee will be $600, all supplies included except for printmaking paper.

Residency Opportunities

Studio Residency - Request For Proposals

Women's Studio Workshop offers a 6-8 week residency for an artist working in printmaking, papermaking, photography, book arts, or ceramics. This residency supports the creation of a new body of work in one of WSW's studio disciplines.

The grant includes a $2,000 to $3,000 artist's stipend, a $700 materials budget, a travel stipend, housing, and unlimited studio use. The artist will be provided with technical advice and assistance in production. WSW welcomes applications from artists in all stages of their careers. This Request for Proposal is a two-step juried process, working with outside funding sources.

WSW selects the artist, then sends their work to appropriate funders for final approval. WSW has a successful track record with funders for this project.
